I attend Walla Walla City Council meetings occasionally and find more often than not there is an absent Council member. Even when all are present, Shane Laib appears to be texting on his cellphone or absorbed on his computer.
I’ve seen him get up during the meeting with his cellphone in hand, exit and come back longer than a bathroom-break away. He rarely strikes me as focusing on the meeting.
Now he is gone for a few months. I agree with Michael Donovan’s letter to the editor that it is: “Time for a change folks.” Donovan writes of being “insulted” by the “rubber stamp absences from our city leaders.”
What I can’t figure out is how Donovan arrived at Barbara Clark “hammering others to the media while promoting oneself.” Chris Plucker made the motion to excuse and nobody on the Council would second the motion, including Barbara Clark.
There was some discussion and still the motion didn’t pass. Barbara Clark and the other Council members should be praised for addressing the issue which, in my opinion, has been long overdue.
