WALLA WALLA — Wa-Hi wrestled shorthanded here Thursday in Mid-Columbia Conference action.
With four starters out with injuries, Wa-Hi gave up 24 forfeit points and could not recover as Pasco posted a 44-24 win over the Blue Devils.
“Our kids wrestled pretty well,” Blue Devil coach Dallas Jones said. “We had a few matches where we were right there and just couldn’t get it done. We’ve got to fix those. But there were a lot of good things that happened tonight.
“We have four varsity kids out,” Jones added. “It’s some weird injuries and things that caught us at one time. I expect those kids back in the next week to two weeks, and that will help us a lot.”
After Pasco opened the night with a decision at 138 pounds, Wa-Hi’s Grover Snell, at 145, got the Blue Devils on the board. Snell, with a take down, a 3-point near fall, and a 2-point near fall, jumped to a 5-0 lead after the first round and coasted home with a 9-2 decision.
At 160, Zachary Anderson spent most of the third round on the mat, but pulled off a late reversal to ice a 7-3 decision for Wa-Hi.
Wa-Hi’s Zachary Gilvey, 170, was working on an escape as time ran out and Pasco’s Luis Velasco hung on for a 9-8 decision.
Zane Henderson posted Wa-Hi’s first pin of the night at 182. Henderson took a 4-1 lead to the third round before pinning the Bulldogs’ James Debosz 35 seconds into the final period.
Pasco’s Misael Estrada scored a late reversal to edge Wa-Hi’s Aaron Campos 6-4 at 195.
Wa-Hi’s Logan Reardon, ranked No. 8 in the state, made quick work of his bout at 285. Reardon pinned Ramon Cortez in 49 seconds as Wa-Hi, at that point, jumped into an 18-15 lead.
“I go out every match with confidence and try my best,” Reardon said. “I’ve been having trouble with shorter guys like him (Cortez). I wanted to play it safe and see what attack he was going to try on me. Once I saw that he was a little tentative, I shot in and got the pin.
“If we have a chance for a comeback, then if I can get a pin that can spark some guys’ mindsets,” Reardon continued. “That could get us going and get us a win.”
Wa-Hi’s Quinn Piver, at heavyweight, followed suit as he pinned his opponent even quicker than Reardon, 25 seconds. Piver’s win moved Wa-Hi to a 24-15 lead.
But the Blue Devils suffered a loss by technical fall and four forfeits the rest of the way as the Bulldogs took the 44-24 win.
“Take nothing away from Pasco, they are a very good team,” Jones said. “But, we wrestled with them with the weights that we had.
“Most of our varsity kids have taken good strides this year,” Jones continued. “It is a process and the kids are learning each and every match. District is where it counts. I’ve been pleased with our seniors, they’re getting better each and every week.”
Wa-Hi travels to Naches for the Ranger Classic Saturday.
