Bulldog girls split weekend's games

FINLEY, Wash. — After watching his team commit 65 turnovers in a pair of non-league road games over the weekend, Dayton girls basketball coach Clayton Strong has a pretty good idea of what his Bulldogs need to concentrate on this week in practice.

“That’s quite a few more than we’ve been making,” Strong said of all the miss handles. “Hopefully we got that out of our system. If we make that many turnovers Friday night it will be a long night, because DeSales will make us pay for turnovers.”

The Bulldogs, who nicked River View 40-38 here Saturday night after suffering a 41-17 drubbing at the hands of Lewiston’s junior varsity squad Friday night in Lewiston, jump back into Southeast 2B League play Friday at DeSales. Dayton is 2-0 so far in league play and 9-2 overall after the weekend split.

After leading twice by as many as seven points, the Bulldogs had to come from four points behind in the final 90 seconds to ease past the Panthers here Saturday night. It was the second meeting of the season between the two schools, and this one was much closer than the Bulldogs’ 48-24 victory Dec. 4 in Dayton.

“Even though we won the first game by 20-some points, we feel fortunate to get the win,” Strong said of Saturday’s game. “River View is fairly long and athletic. They have a couple of tall girls who handle the ball and rebound well, and they took advantage a few times when we didn’t block out.

“And then our turnovers helped them hang around.”

Dayton turned the ball over 32 times in the game but cleaned up its act in the nick of time.

Trailing 38-34, Malia Frame knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:30 showing on the fourth-quarter clock to make it a one-possession game. Lexie Ramirez followed with two more free throws with 38 seconds to play to knot the score at 38-38.

The Bulldogs got the ball back seconds later and called time out. A designed play got the ball to McKayla Bickelhaupt in the corner. Bickelhaupt drove the baseline and put up an 10-foot runner with 12 seconds showing for what proved to be the winning basket.

River View had one final chance to pull out the victory, but a 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off target and the Bulldogs prevailed.

Ramirez led Dayton in scoring with 13 points and Bickelhaupt finished with 12. Josie Robertson led the Panthers with 10 points and Ashley Dickinson and McKenzie Smith tallied seven points each.

In Friday’s game at Lewiston, Dayton led 5-3 after one quarter but was outscored 21-6 in the second period and never recovered. Bickelhaupt’s nine points led the Bulldogs’ modest offensive output while Rayla Lohman scored 11 points to pace the Bengals.

“To Lewiston’s credit, they did a lot of things that we don’t normally see and didn’t adjust to very well,” Strong said in explaining his team’s 33 turnovers in the game.

“They ran some man pressure, a half-court trap and some full-court trapping pressure. We didn’t do a good job of recognizing it or attacking it as we have done in previous games.

“That’s on me as much as anything.”
