Pomeroy takes 5th at Coyote Classic

KITTITAS, Wash. — Pomeroy’s wrestling team took fifth place out of 16 teams at the Coyote Classic here Saturday.

“I was real happy with fifth place as a team,” Pomeroy coach Brian Slaybaugh said. “I didn’t go in expecting to place that high.”

The Pirates’ Ryan Smith (160 pounds) and Austin Reisdorph (220) placed first in their competitions.

Wyatt Jenkins rounded out the Pomeroy placers, placing second at 170.

Smith pinned his way to two victories and won a decision.

“This is actually his first first place (Smith has) ever got in high school,” Slaybaugh said. “He wrestled really well today.”

Reisdorph, in his first meet back from an injury suffered during the football season, pinned all three of his competitors.

“He looked pretty good,” Slaybaugh said of Reisdorph. “He’s a pretty physical, athletic kid.

“His match in the finals, I told him to wrestle a while. He ended up with a second-round pin.”

Jenkins pinned his first two opponents and lost by decision in the championship match of the bracket.

At 138, Havin Heytvelt didn’t place but finished 2-2 in the tournament.

Also winning matches for the Pirates were Jack Neice (120), Greg Florek (132), Adam Herres (145), Kyle Hyer and Blaine Reisdorph (152).

“We’re not looking too bad,” Slaybaugh said. “Some of the kids didn’t wrestle as well as I had hoped, but overall I thought we did a good job.”

Pomeroy attends a Southeast 1B-2B meet in Pasco at Tri-Cities Prep Saturday.
