WALLA WALLA — Whitman College shot the lights out here Saturday in Northwest Conference women’s basketball action.

The Missionaries hit 32-of 60 shots from the field (53 percent) for the game and cruised to a 72-41 win over Willamette.

The Missionaries improve to 6-2 in the NWC, one game behind 7-1 co-leaders Lewis and Clark and George Fox.

The Bearcats fall to 0-6 in NWC play and remain in last place.

The Missionaires leaped to a 43-21 at intermission and never looked back.

“We did a lot better job of executing our half-court offense,” Whitman coach Michelle Ferenz said. “I thought we took advantage of some matchup advantages that we had against Willamette.”

Whitman had it all going, except for 3-point shooting, in this one. The Missionaries only took three shots from behind the arc with Hallie Buse hitting the only Missionary trey of the night.

Whitman hit 7-of 11 from the free-throw line, and with Meghan White grabbing a game-high eight rebounds, Whitman out rebounded the Bearcats 39-29. The Missionaries got everyone involved as they dished out 17 assists. Heather Johns and Alyssa Maine led the way with four dimes each.

And the Missionary defense held the Bearcats to 31 percent shooting, 14-of-45 and forced 24 turn overs.

Seven Missionaries scored, three in double digits. Johns led the way with 17 points. Sarah Anderegg scored 16 and Mary Madden added 10.

Whitman, 13-3 overall, begins the Tacoma weekend trip at Pacific Lutheran University Friday.
