MILTON-FREEWATER — The Milton-Freewater Neighborhood Senior Center has been awarded two grants from the Sherwood Trust of Walla Walla to help with building repairs and upgrades.
One grant, in excess of $15,000, will be used for a more than $16,000 project to lower energy bills by upgrading insulation and electric improvements, Ruth Meyers, the center’s secretary, said in a release.
The other grant, for $25,000, is to establish a reserve fund for future repair and building needs plus equipment. The second award is contingent on center members and the board raising at least $5,000 through its own fund-raising efforts to supplement the reserve fund.
Toward that end, members plan to hold a yard sale July 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the center, 311 N. Main St.
Another contingency for the second grant, Meyers said, is that the board approve a budget plan that shows the center operating at a profit and adopt a building and equipment replacement reserve policy.
“Both such plans are currently in the planning process and should be finalized by summer’s end,” she said.
People who want to donate items for the center’s yard sale may call LaVonne Hansen at 541-938-0609 or Meredith Corliss at 541-938-6091.
