PENDLETON — Two Walla Walla men now have been charged in connection with the home invasion and assault of a 79-year-old woman in Umapine early this year.
Matthew R. Hermann, 20, and Caleb L. Scott, 21, face multiple charges in the Jan. 30 assault of Joyce Key at her home northwest of Milton-Freewater.
Key was discovered by her son after the attack. She had suffered head wounds, according to police reports at the time, and was taken to a hospital in Post Falls, Idaho, for treatment.
Evidence found at the scene of the assault reportedly led the Umatilla/Morrow Major Crimes Team in February to Oklahoma where Herman had been arrested on unrelated drug charges.
He then was identified as a suspect.
A third man, Jacob White, 18, also of Walla Walla, is not in police custody. Umatilla County Sheriff Terry Rowan has said White appears to have played a lesser role in the crime and investigators know where he is.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Hermann has been charged by the Umatilla County District Attorney’s Office with various counts of attempted aggravated murder, assault, robbery, theft, burglary and kidnapping.
Scott faces robbery, kidnapping, burglary and conspiracy charges.
Hermann and Scott are incarcerated at the Umatilla County Jail.
The assault sparked a community outcry, and launched neighborhood watch meetings and multiple meetings with law enforcement and local government officials.
