Griz beat slop, sweep Moses Lake

WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla Griz mucked through wet conditions at Murr Field Wednesday to hand the Moses Lake Sun Devils a pair of Central Washington American Legion Class A losses, 13-7 and 5-1.

The Griz (4-4, 15-8) and Sun Devils comitted a combined 11 errors in a sloppy rain-delayed opener, four for the Griz and seven for the Sun Devils, but Walla Walla backed those errors up with 11 base hits.

“The field conditions were kind of rough for the first game,” Griz coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “The field was a little wet, that contributed to a couple of the errors.”

Joe Yenney led the Griz in Game 1 with three base hits, scoring twice and collecting three RBI.

Walla Walla built a 7-3 lead through four innings before two Griz errors in the fifth allowed Moses Lake to even the game at 7.

Walla Walla answered back in the bottom of the inning, however, scoring six runs on two hits, five walks and a dropped flyout for an error to win the game.

“We got 13 runs, a couple of them came off erorrs, but a lot of them came off hits too, timely hits,” Van Dyke said. “We were able to run the bases well against them.”

The nightcap was a neater affair, with the Griz’s loan error the only miscue of the contest.

“The rain stopped and I think that helped a lot,” Van Dyke said. “I think the guys kind of got used to it (the rain) and we didn’t have as many delays.”

The Griz dribbled across runs in the first and second and added a three-spot in the fifth before Moses Lake notched a run.

Griz starter Joey Camacho pitched four scoreless innings before running into trouble in the sixth.

After getting a leadoff flyout, Camacho gave up a double and three consecutive walks to force in Moses Lake’s lone run of the game. That brought in reliever Dexter Aichele, who managed to stem the bleeding with a flyout and strikeout to end the inning.

Moses Lake loaded the bases again in the seventh but wasn’t able to push across a run.

The Bruins next visit the Hanford Flames in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
