Pomeroy advances past Christian Faith at state, 60-53

SPOKANE — Pomeroy rallied from a 13-9 first-quarter deficit to fight off 21-3 Christian Faith in opening-round action at the Class 2B Hardwood Classic boys basketball tournament at the Spokane Arena Thursday.

The Pirates used a 22-11 second-quarter run to spring-board them to a 60-55 win.

“That was a tough one,” Pomeroy coach Brian Koller said. “That’s a good basketball team (Christian Faith). Their big kid (6-foot-6 Segun Amosun) was hard to defend, and their guards are quick. “

The victory moves the Pirates into the state semifinals and a 7:15 p.m. matchup with Sunnyside Christian tonight and guarantees the Pirates a spot in Saturday’s trophy round.

“I brought four teams here (state) and never once got a trophy,” Koller said. “This will be a first. It’s pretty exciting. Sunnyside Christian has a good legacy up here (winning four of the last six titles). It’s going to be tough. I think we match up with them pretty well, but it’ll be a battle.”

It didn’t start pretty for the Pirates as they hit only 3-of-18 from the field — and many of those from inside the paint — but Cole Mayfield hit a trey with 30 seconds on the clock to get Pomeroy within 13-9 after one quarter.

“We missed a lot of baby shots,” Koller said. “Might have been a little bit of nerves.”

Tanner Feider missed his first four shots from the field, but hit his first two 3s to start his second quarter.

Riley Bott drained a trey to get the Pirate second period started.

Cody LaMunyan’s bucket with 6:53 left in the half gave the Pirates a 15-14 lead.

And then Feider went to work. The senior scored nine more before intermission and threw in an assist to Max Ruchert. Feider finished with 12 on 5-of-6 shooting for the quarter and the Pirates went to intermission with a 31-24 lead.

“He had a real good second quarter,” Koller said of Feider. “We needed that because we struggled in the first quarter.”

The third period belonged to the Pirate posts, Bott and LaMunyan. The two combined for seven rebounds and 14 points. Bott hit two treys and a bucket, and LaMunyan got a put-back and two other deuces as Pomeroy maintained its seven-point lead with a 47-40 margin after three.

“I decided we needed to get some more points up,” the 6-6 Bott said. “I knocked down some shots.”

“He (Bott) hit some shots,” Koller said. “That was good for him. He needed that for his confidence. I like it when the big guys have to go out and guard him on the perimeter.”

LaMunyan, off a Bott feed, produced the only Pirate points over the first two minutes of the fourth quarter.

The Eagles, following a fall-back jumper from Afari Stinson-Richardson narrowed the Pirate lead to 49-46 with six minutes left.

Feider hit a pair of free throws, Mayfield converted one, and Bott drained a trey as the Pirates responded to jump the lead back to 55-48 with 3:40 to play.

Bott blocked a Stinson-Richardson 3, and at the other end, LaMunyan hit a put-back for a 57-48 Pirate advantage with 2:10 to go.

The Eagles made one last run as Makaran Toor drained the last of his team-high 18 points with an NBA trey to pull Christian Faith within 57-53 with 41 seconds remaining.

After Tanner Feider missed a front end of a one-and-one with 37 seconds left, Tyson Feider hit the front end at the 24-second mark, and Tanner Feider finally sealed this one as he converted both ends of a 1-and-1 with 14 ticks left.

“Third quarter, we played pretty well,” Koller said. “Then the fourth quarter, we hung on.”

“We D’ed them up real well,” Bott said. “They hit a few shots, but we came back and guarded them and got it done.”

Bott and LaMunyan both had double-doubles to lead the Pirates.

Bott scored 19 and grabbed 10 boards.

LaMunyan and Tanner Feider chipped in 16 each, and LaMunyan snared 10 rebounds.

“It’s really hard for other teams as they have to worry about two guys,” Bott said of the Pirate post tandem. “They start worrying about one, and that leaves the other one open.”

The Pirates look for a spot in Saturday’s championship final in tonight’s battle.

“If we play how we know how to play, we can get stuff done,” Bott added.
