L-W-K buzzes Pirates in battle for 3rd at state

SPOKANE — Pomeroy ran into a buzz saw here Saturday in the trophy round of the boys WIAA Class 1B state basketball tournament.

Southeast 1B league nemesis LaCrosse-Washtucna-Kahlotus shot 45 percent from the floor, 52 percent in the second half, and the Tigercats defeated Pomeroy 67-36.

The win gave L-W-K the third-place trophy and the Pirates take home fifth, their first trophy since a seventh-place finish in 1981.

Riley Bott drained a trey from the corner 15 seconds into this one for a quick 3-0 Pirate lead. Cody LaMunyan converted a Tanner Feider dish for the last tie the Pirates would manage on this afternoon, as Pomeroy tied it at 5-5 with 5:46 left in the first.

Tigercat Alec Fleming answered with a trey for an 8-5 L-W-K lead with 4:40 to go in the first, and the Cats’ hot shooting took over.

After Bott’s initial trey, the Pirates missed their next eight from behind the arc, and the Tigercats jumped to what proved to be an insurmountable 21-7 lead after one.

“We were hoping we would get hot,” senior Tanner Feider said of the first-quarter 3-point barrage. “We wanted to start a spark and go.”

“We kind of went cold after hitting those two shots,” Pirate coach Brian Koller said. “We struggled in the first quarter.”

Cole Mayfield hit a trey to start the second period and Pomeroy fought back into this one.

LaMunyan scored a deuce and a trey in the quarter to lead the Pirates to a 12-8 second-period advantage and get them within 29-19 at the half.

The Tigercats would have none of a Pomeroy rally on this afternoon, however.

L-W-K hit six of its first eight shots to open the second half and, following a Darcy Stamper bucket, the Tigercats ran the lead to 42-22 with 4:17 to play in the third.

A Riley Bott bucket to end the third period got the Pirates within 43-28, but they would get no closer on this day.

“The second quarter was better,” Koller said. “But, (overall) we didn’t execute very well offensively. We didn’t rebound very well. We allowed them to build up a pretty good lead.”

LaMunyan’s 10 points led the Pirates. The Tigercats got 19 from 6-foot-4 post Jed Zimmer and 15 from Austin Summers in the victory.

The Pirates finish 20-8 and earn their fourth state trophy in program history.

The Pirates finished seventh in 1951, second in 1980, seventh in 1981, and will add a fifth-place award to the trophy case in 2013.

“We had a pretty good season,” Koller said. “We exceeded everybody’s expectations this year. It was a good experience and only having one senior, we’ve got a good nucleus of kids coming back. It’s going to be fun and exciting.”

The good news is that Pomeroy only graduates one senior. The bad news is that one senior is Tanner Feider.

“Tanner had a great year,” Koller said. “He missed the first five games with mono, and slowly worked his way back. The last 10-to-15 games, he has played tremendously. We’re going to miss him quite a bit.”

And Feider will miss his Pirates.

“It has been great,” senior Tanner Feider said of going to state. “I’ve never been before and I’m glad I did it my senior year, and I wouldn’t want to do it with any other guys than my team. It’s been awhile since we earned a trophy.”

And the senior is looking to keep his basketball career alive as he moves forward.

“I would like to play at a junior college somewhere,” Feider commented. “I don’t really know right now. We’ll see what happens.”
