WALLA WALLA — The No. 13-ranked Whitman men’s tennis team swept away University of Puget Sound 9-0 here Friday, before completing the weekend sweep with an 8-1 trouncing of Whitworth on the Whitman courts Saturday.
Against Whitworth, Whitman took an early lead which it never relinquished, when Steven Roston and Colton Malesovas ousted Whitworth’s John Talbot and Matt Goebel, 8-1, at No. 3 doubles.
Missionaries Matt Tesmond and Andy Riggs made it 2-0 Whitman with an 8-4 win over Chris Engelmann and Blake Miller at No. 2.
In singles competition, Whitman’s depth quickly put the match out of reach, with junior Will Huskey making it 3-1 Whitman with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Micah Spaun at No. 6.
Riggs moved his team to the brink of victory by beating John Talbot by the same score; and Roston clinched the victory when he toppled Blake Miller, 6-0.
Things were more competitive at the top half of the singles ladder, but the Pirates couldn’t come away with a victory.
On Friday, the No. 1 and No. 2 Missonary doubles team each won by a perfect 8-0 score, with Tesmond and Malesovas teaming at No. 1 and Sadeghi and Roston at No. 2.
Huskey and Alex Noyes won 8-4 over Abe Noyes and John Stevens in No. 3 doubles.
Whitman singles No. 1 and No. 3 players, La Cava and Roston, won in straight sets by identical scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, Sadeghi won over Daneli Deuel, 6-1 and 6-1.
Huskey contribued a No. 4 win over Abe Noyes, 6-0 and 6-1.
The No. 5 win for Whitman was Alex Noyes over Jake Peterson, 6-0 and 6-0. Whitman’s Dyalan Bodet rounded out the sweep with a 6-2 and 6-0 victory over John Stevens.
On Friday, the Missionaries travel to Forest Grove, Ore., to play the Pacific Boxers before flying to Santa Cruz, Calif., for a quad of West-Region all-stars. On Sunday, the No. 13 Whits face off against both the No. 16 Pomona-Pitzer Sage Gens and No. 20 Texas-Tyler Patriots before regrouping for a Monday morning tilt with the No. 11 UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs.
