TigerScots open with win over Union

ATHENA — Weston-McEwen High School jumped on Union early and never looked back Tuesday, beating the Bobcats 7-3 in a non-league baseball game to open its season.

“We just fixed our field over the weekend, so it was kind of fun to finally get to play on it,” W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said. “We kind of got off on the right foot and kind of coasted from there.”

Union pitcher Kaleb Poor struggled in his first start of the season, giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks before being pulled with an out gone in the second.

Weston-McEwen tacked on another run in the second as Jerad Croswell crossed home on an error and the TigerScots led 6-0 with two innings gone.

Union scored a pair of runs in the fourth and added another in the fifth, but went scoreless in the sixth and seventh.

Weston-McEwen added another run in the sixth when Croswell earned a base on balls to force home Calvin Thacker.

W-M starter Justin Burke gave up two hits and one earned run in four innings of work while walking four and getting three strikeouts.

“He (Burke) did a great job,” Haguewood said. “He kept the ball low and let the defense work behind him.”

Lance Thacker pitched three innings in relief, giving up three hits and a run while striking out one and walking two.

“Overall I thought the pitching was good,” Haguewood said. “We definitely didn’t improve, but the defense was able to make plays behind them.”

Five different TigerScots picked up hits in the win: Lance Thacker, Calvin Thacker, K.J. White, Croswell and Michael Guerrero.

“Overall it was a good game,” Haguewood said. “There’s definitely some things we can improve on, but it was nice to see the effort that the boys put in in the first game.”

The TigerScots (1-0) visit DeSales Thursday in a non-league single game, DeSales’ home opener, at 4 p.m.
