ATHENA — Weston-McEwen High School kicked off the girls softball season on the right foot here Friday.
The TigerScots limited Elgin High School to five hits on the afternoon as W-M swept a non-league doubleheader, 8-2 and 8-1.
W-M got off to a slow start in the opener as its first nine batters were retired, but that changed in the fourth.
Molly von Borstel got it started in the fourth with a two-out single. Taylor Entze, Keegan Shephard, Shyne Rudolph, and J’Shon Thompson followed with hits and the TigerScots put five runs on the board. That was more than enough for von Borstel who went all the way in the circle for the TigerScots and pitched a two-hitter while striking out 12.
“Molly was pretty sharp for the first game out,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “We made our three errors in the seventh that allowed one run.”
In the night cap, the TigerScots got it going with a four-run first and behind the pitching of Entze and freshman Jessica Lambert, that was more than enough.
The TigerScots travel to Prescott Tuesday.
