RICHLAND — Walla Walla High School’s boys golf team finished tied for third at the first Mid-Columbia Conference pod match of the season at a windy Meadow Springs Country Club on Monday.
Dean Atkinson and Nick Atwood led the Blue Devil contingent with identical 83s on the par-72 course.
“We all love Meadow Springs, but I can’t remember the last time we played there when the weather was good,” Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. “It was just howling, except for the last half hour, 45 minutes when it calmed down. The wind affected everybody’s scores. It was a tough day for everybody, but I thought our kids handled it pretty well, especially the younger kids.”
Also carding counting scores for Wa-Hi were Nate Turner with an 88 and Konor Clark with 93.
Hanford’s Tanner Martin was medalist with a 75.
The Bombers won the match with a 316, followed by Richland at 320, Southridge and Wa-Hi at 347, Kamiakin at 363, Kennewick 369 and Chiawana 416. Pasco didn’t field a team.
Wa-Hi’s Troy Aguilar recorded a non-counting 100, and Tyler Morrison 102.
Smith said focus is a little different this year, with the 3A and 4A teams competing together during the season and then separating for the district tournament, with the 4A advancing five players to state.
“We’ve got some really good golfers, and our goal is to get the kids ready for district,” he said.
The Blue Devils next compete at the Canyon Lakes Invite in Kennewick next Monday.
