Indians rout Umatilla, 18-8, in five innings

UMATILLA — Touchet High School used an 11-run third inning to break open its baseball game with Umatilla High School Thursday afternoon, turning what had been a 6-5 squeaker into a 18-8 rout.

The Indians quickly chased Umatilla starter Tucker Hurley from the mound, scoring four runs before Nick Snyder came on with an out gone and threw two strikeouts to end the inning.

Umatilla answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning and outscored Touchet in the second, 3-2, but Touchet teed off on Snyder for 12 hits en route to 11 runs in the third inning.

“They kind of stayed with us for a bit and then in the third inning we kind of settled in,” Touchet coach Tim McKeown said. “We had 12 hits in the third inning alone and we left three guys on base. We just got more patient and settled in and started hitting the ball.”

Umatilla scored three more runs in the bottom of the inning, but Jared Ortiz came on to pitch in the fourth and held the Vikings scoreless until the game came to a mercy-rule-shortened end after the fifth inning.

“Jared came in and shut them down,” McKeown said. “It was a couple different speeds there (between Ortiz and Touchet starter Damien Goucher), and they really struggled getting on against Jared.”

Ortiz finished with three strikeouts after allowing one hit over two innings.

Touchet, which defeated Umatilla 14-4 on March 14, improves to 3-0 and opens Southeast 1B play with a doubleheader against the defending state champions Colton at 11 a.m. Saturday in Touchet.
