Wa-Hi girls strafe Bombers, 6-1

RICHLAND — Wa-Hi’s Allison Mehn outlasted Richland’s Madeline Quick in a three-set marathon here Thursday and set the tone as Blue Devils defeated the Bombers 6-1 in a non-conference girls tennis match between Mid-Columbia League rivals.

The Blue Devils’ No. 1 singles player took the first set 6-2, lost the second 6-4 and prevailed 7-6 (7-3) in a a third-set tiebreaker.

“Allison had a great three-set victory, which was followed up by wins from Rachel Schueller and Lexi Swenson,” Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck said.

Schueller was victorious as No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Anna Lipton, and Swenson took No. 4 singles 6-0, 6-3 over Hallie Carey.

Wa-Hi also swept doubles play, although Catelyn Buettner and Hailey Lewis were the only Wa-Hi girls to take the court. Buettner and Lewis won No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-1 over Taiana Gardaya and Michelle Pham after Richland had forfeited the first two doubles matches.

“The match was a bit different in that Richland has some issues with player eligibility, illness and conflict,” Peck said. “Richland was forced to restructure its lineup, but since it was a non-league match the timing worked out.

“The girls took it in stride and used it as an opportunity to get better. These girls have a great attitude about competing and dealing with the uncertainty of what a day of tennis can bring, and I’m always proud of their ability to adjust.”
