Asotin shellacks inexperienced Dayton squad

ASOTIN — Experience proved to be the difference here Saturday in a Southeast 2B baseball doubleheader.

Experienced Asotin High School took advantage of Dayton High School’s 12 youthful errors to sweep the double dip, 10-0 and 26-2.

Lowden Smith pitched a complete game for the Bulldogs in the opener, but the Panthers only gave up two hits, to Smith and Logan Hays, in blanking Dayton.

“Lowden pitched well if we could’ve given him some help in the field,” Bulldog coach Sal Benavides said. “We had some base runners but couldn’t get the big hit.”

Dayton got two runs in the first to open the second game. The Panthers responded with a 10 spot aided by a dropped fly ball, and the Bulldogs never threatened the rest of the way.

Smith and Christian Warner both had two hits for the Bulldogs in the losing effort.

Dayton travels to Pomeroy for a non-league doubleheader with the Pirates Tuesday.

“We’ll keep battling,” Benavides said of his young squad, which has no seniors and starts three eighth graders. “We have to catch fly balls. We’re a work in progress but we have improved with each game.”
