Yaks bang out 19 hits in nightcap, hand WWCC baseball split

WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Community College and Yakima Valley split an NWAACC Eastern Region baseball doubleheader on a sun-kissed Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Warriors got a complete game from right-hander Jake Campeau in the opener and emerged victorious by a 6-1 count.

YVC banged out 19 hits in the nightcap and earned a split with a 14-9 triumph.

WWCC is now 2-2 in league and 10-10 overall.

Campeau scattered nine hits in game one, but allowed just two hits after the fourth inning. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

Offensively, Jarod Gonzales collected two hits, an equal number of RBIs, and scored once to lead Walla Walla.

The Warriors came up short in the second game despite a 17-hit attack. Kevin Toon and Ryan Neal led WWCC with three hits apiece.

“Jake Campeau had another outstanding outing,” Walla Walla coach Dave Meliah said. “We had some clutch at-bats to help us extend the lead in the first game.

“The second game was a back-and-forth slugfest,” Meliah said.

The Warriors continue league play Wednesday at Big Bend.
