Daniel Henry New died Wednesday March 20, 2013, in Vancouver, Wash., after a long and happy life. He was 88. He was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Walla Walla the youngest of 6 children of Otto and Margaret (Atteberry) New. Much of his youth was spent camping, fishing, biking and skiing in the Blue Mountains. He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1942, where he was senior class president. He met Kathleen Rueter while making divinity, a favorite family confection, at Tollgate Ski Club in February 1948. They got married 6 months later. In December, 1950 the family moved from Walla Walla to Vancouver and a new job as an outside salesman for Wolf Supply, an auto supply wholesaler, where he worked for 37 years before retiring. They were instrumental in establishing the Clark County Square Dance Center, where he served on the board and as president for many years and put in uncounted hours of maintenance at the facility.

He was a consummate fisherman, going after salmon and steelhead in the Columbia and its Washington tributaries from the Cowlitz to the Little White Salmon. He was known to wait if someone was in one of his favorite spots. After they came up fruitless and moved on, he would swoop in and hook a fish with in 3 or 4 casts.

Every summer he would raise corn, tomatoes, asparagus, zinnias, begonias, and various other vegetables and flowers. It was always a treat to have Sunday dinner being entirely home grown and fresh caught.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Enid, and Margaret; and brothers, Richard, Willy, and David. He is survived by his wife of 64 years Kathleen; his five children, David (Dar) of Bellingham, Fred (Ester) in Estonia, Margie Livingston (Brian) of Seattle, son Bob (Marilyn) of Redmond, Lloyd (Tracey) of Ridgefield; granddaughters, Jennifer Parker (Jeff), Aimee Beltz (John), Taylor New; two great-grandsons, Sam Beltz and Tyler Parker, and numerous nieces and nephews.
