Martha A. Payne of Milton-Freewater passed away on April 29, 2013, at the age of 96 years. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Milton-Freewater Cemetery with Pastor Jeff Beazley officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2013, from 7-9 p.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home, 902 S. Main, Milton-Freewater, OR 97862. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Martha Payne to the Walla Walla Community Hospice in care of the funeral home.
Martha A. Payne was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Humboldt, Kan., to Ernest L. Truster and Flora J. Adams Truster. Martha and her husband moved to the Yakima Valley with their children in search of work in the late 1940s. After moving around the Pacific Northwest, they settled down in the Pendleton, Milton-Freewater area to finish raising their family. She held a variety of jobs and was a homemaker. Martha was also a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, and had a lot of loving and supportive friends.
Martha is survived by her son, Lawrence W. Payne Jr. of Mountain Home, Idaho; and her sister, Ella Carl of Wichita, Kan. Martha has five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Her sisters, Bessie Clover, Alberta Chase; and her husband, Lawrence W. Payne of Milton-Freewater; along with her daughter, Judith C. Warnock of Tigard, Ore., all preceded her in death.
