WALLA WALLA — DeSales prepared for District 9 baseball play Saturday at Borleske Stadium with a 5-0 non-league victory over Mac-Hi at Ray Lane Field on Tuesday.

“I thought our three guys (Logan Hoeft, Adam Eskil, Cameron Richman) threw pretty well,” Irish coach Kim Cox said. “The kids have been playing good defense all year, and we got a few base knocks we needed.”

DeSales took advantage of a couple Pioneer errors to plate two runners in the first inning, followed with another in the second and added the final two in the fifth.

Mac-Hi pitchers Saul Ortiz and Hunter Yensen did limit the potent Irish bats to five hits in the game.

“We had a couple errors in the first inning and they scored a couple runs, but we played well after that,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “Our pitchers did a good job against DeSales, which is always competitive. They’re a good hitting team, and we were able to keep their baserunners off (the paths).”

Garcia said the Pioneers had some good starts to the third and fourth innings with lead-off walks, but running errors ended those scoring hopes.

Mac-Hi, 10-11 overall and 1-9 in Greater Oregon League play, hosts Ontario for a season-ending twin bill at 2 p.m. Friday.

“I hope the guys come out to play,” Garcia said. “I think they will, so we can close out the season with a winning record. It’s been a good season, we’ve played competitive baseball against GOL opponents, we just haven’t gotten the key hits when we needed them.”

DeSales, 17-2 overall, plays Southeast 2B rival Asotin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday for the first seed to the regional tournament. The loser of that game plays the winner of the Tri-Cities Prep vs. Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia game at 11 a.m. Saturday for the No. 2 and 3 seeds to regional.

“Our guys are pretty healthy,” Cox said. “We’re looking forward to it, it’s a fun time of year.”
