MILTON-FREEWATER — The town is mourning the loss of one of its educators, who died after a battle with cancer.

Ronald “Ron” Richwine, 45, died Sunday at his home. The associate principal of Ferndale Elementary School was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last spring. He was given about a year to live in January after surgery was unable to remove all cancer cells.

Milton-Freewater School District Interim Superintendent Jim Reger canceled classes this Friday to allow staff, students and families time to attend Richwine’s funeral that day. His funeral is scheduled in the city’s Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1244 N. Elizabeth St.

Three Crisis Flight Teams from the InterMountain Education Service District were at district schools this week to help students and staff cope with the loss.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Ron Richwine,” Reger said in a statement. “He was an amazing educator who touched the lives of many children, and he will be missed. Our hearts go out to Ron’s family during this difficult time.”
