DeSales avenges loss to W-P, wins regionals

SPOKANE — The District 7/9 softball tournament came down to a rematch of the District 9 title game between DeSales and Waitsburg-Prescott. The Irish avenged a 3-2 loss and defeated W-P 11-1.

DeSales takes the No. 1 seed and W-P grabs the No. 2 seed to the state Class 2B tournament in Yakima beginning Friday at Gateway Park.

“I think they may have been looking for revenge,” W-P coach Angie Potts said. “They jumped on us early and we didn’t recover.”

The Irish, thanks in part to a three-run home run off the bat of Ashlyn Lyons, scored seven in the first, and never looked back.

“We got seven in the first and put the pressure on W-P,” Irish coach Russ Vera said. “We spread our hitting around and had girls step up. I’m proud of them.”

In the circle for the Irish, Ashlyn Lyons won her third game of the day. Lyons gave up three hits and struck out seven. Lyons led the offense with three hits, giving her three hits in each of three DeSales wins on the day. Teresa Acock, Allesyn Lyons, and Ali Zander each chipped in two hits to the 13-hit Irish attack.

W-P advanced to the title game with an opening 11-3 win over Mary Walker. Chelsey Brannock led the offense with a home run as W-P pounded out 14 hits in the win.

W-P defeated Dayton 8-4 in its next game to earn a shot at DeSales. Brannock and Rhiannon Chapman led W-P with three hits each. In the circle, Jennifer Nichols scattered eight hits in a complete game effort to pick up her second win of the day. Sarah Phillips and Jessica Tate led the Bulldogs with two hits each.

“I’m pretty happy with the day,” Potts said. “We played well in our first two games.”

For the Irish, it took a seventh-inning run to squeak out a 4-3 win over Liberty of Spangle, Wash., in their Saturday opener. Liberty tied it with three runs in the sixth, but in their last at bat in the home seventh, Acock led off with a single. Molli Lesko followed with a double to drive Acock to third with the game winner. Ashlyn Lyons delivered Acock with a single and the Irish moved on to play Northwest Christian.

A four run first, and Ashlyn Lyons’ pitching was too much for the Crusaders as the Irish advanced to meet W-P with an 8-1 win. Lesko with two hits, and Ashlyn Lyons with three led the Irish offense. In the circle, Ashlyn Lyons went the distance, giving up only a harmless seventh inning run and finishing with a five hitter.

DeSales, W-P, and Dayton all open play Friday in the 2B state tournament.
