ONTARIO, Ore. — Josie Lonai won two events and Kristi Childers placed second in the 100-meter dash to lead McLoughlin High School at the Greater Oregon League track and field championships in Ontario, Ore. Friday and Saturday.

Lonai and Childers were the only Pioneers to make the 2-athlete cut to the state meet, slated for Friday and Saturday in Eugene.

Lonai, who holds the school record in the 1500 (5:00.26), edged out the second-place finisher in the 1500 by just .54 seconds, outracing La Grande’s Amanda Welch in 5:04.17. She also won a narrow victory in the 800, beating La Grande’s Jasmine Smith by .62 seconds (2:30.15).

“She came up today and had a great day,” Mac-Hi coach Stacie Pickler said of Lonai. “She started out the day with a strong 800. She took the lead early and she just ran her own pace. And she ran a great strategy race in the 3200 — she was in the pack for most of the race and she just chose the right time to break away.”

Crook County’s Laken Berlin won the 100 over Childers, who finished .09 seconds behind Berlin in 13.21.

“She did really well in all of her events today,” Pickler said of Childers. “The girl that beat her (Berlin) is definitely tough competition. I think we’re going to see some great things from her in the future.”

Tyler Edwards and Jesus Saldana were the closest boys to making state.

Saldana placed third in the pole vault with a leap of 11-00, 6 inches shy of second place.

And Edwards lept 5-06 in the high jump for a third place finish, 8 inches short of a three-way tie for first place.

“I was really proud of our team,” Pickler said. “We’ve got a very young team and we’re losing very few seniors. I was impressed with how many younger kids I saw on the podium today, maybe not in first or second, but they were right in the thick of things. I think that says a lot about the future of our program going forward.”
