Winning a Washington state championship in any sport is rare for a high school, regardless of division. Washington state has 389 high schools divided into six divisions, an average of 64 teams per division.
Yet, Walla Walla’s DeSales Catholic High School captured two state 2B team titles this spring — baseball and boys’ golf. And the titles are repeats of 2012 for the two teams.
Golfer Ryan Baumgart, one of four DeSales’ golfers to qualify in the top 40 and finish in the top 20, won the individual title for the third straight year.
The Irish baseball team’s 2013 championship was its 18th under Coach Kim Cox over the past 25 years. Coach Cox’s record of success is amazing.
Winning championships has nothing to do with the luck of the Irish, and everything to do with being well prepared and hard work.
Congratulations to DeSales for winning another baseball championship and golf championship as well as Baumgart for repeating as 2B/1B state champion.
