SPOKANE VALLEY — Waitsburg-Prescott’s Emily Adams ran herself to the state 1B/2B cross country championships here at the District 7/9 championships over the 5-kilometer course at Plantes Ferry Saturday.
The top 20 individuals and the top four teams qualified for Saturday’s state meet at Sun Willows golf course in Pasco.
Adams, a freshman, ran a 20:54.51 to finish fourth and punch her state ticket.
“Emily ran a smart and controlled race,” W-P coach Joanna Lanning said. “I’m very proud of her effort. She competed hard but kept her head. She’s our rock star and wants to have an excellent showing at her first state appearance.”
On the boys side, W-P senior E.J. Meserve qualified for state with a 17:49.6 run that placed him in 13th. Asotin’s Chandler Teigen turned in the best run of the day with a 16:19.25 to win. Northwest Christian-Colbert, Tri-Cities Prep, Asotin, and St. Georges all earned team tickets.
“E.J. did extremely well, finishing 13th,” Lanning said. “He set a goal, met it, and will be at state for the third consecutive year. He looked strong and relaxed the entire race setting him up to be competitive at state.”
Kyle Gradwohl was the next W-P boy to cross the finish line, finishing in 55th (20:27.92).
Pomeroy’s Stephen Fletcher led the Pirates, running a 19:54.68 for 48th. Dayton’s Levi Laib ran a 20:51.12 to finish 59th.
On the girls side, Pomeroy’s Zoe Kerne was the first Pirate finisher, she placed 59th in 29:56.97.
