POMEROY — The Pomeroy football team kept it close in the first half, but Sunnyside Christian scored 34 second-half points to distance themselves from the Pirates here Friday.
The Knights connected on seven touchdowns from more than 20 yards out, as big plays led to a 56-34 Pirate loss.
Pomeroy (2-3, 1-1) head coach Sanford Bates said Sunnyside Christian’s running back Luke Wavrin used his speed to torch the Pirates defense.
“They got the ball into (Wavrin’s) hands in that second half whether it was in the flat or swing passes,” Bates said. “If you don’t make the first initial tackle on him, he was able to use his speed and athletic ability to get around us.”
Wavrin finished the game with 243 rushing yards and 173 receiving yards. He connected on scores of 32, 63, 39, 65 and 64 yards.
Pomeroy’s rushing attack also had a big day, as running back Cade Gingerich racked up 103 yards and quarterback Kade Snyder rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Wyatt Hyer also picked up 74 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.
Bates said although Pomeroy could not connect on big touchdown plays, the ground game still moved the ball with ease.
“We always try to find the weakness of the defense,” Bates said. “At first we were able to run the option a little bit and get our tailback to the outside. Then they adjusted to that and we were able to get our fullback inside and get a few yards from that.”
Pomeroy was down 22-18 at halftime, but Sunnyside Christian scored the next 20 points to put the game out of reach.
The Knights’ quarterback, Wyatt Hoff, found Wavrin for a 63-yard touchdown pass and then found Brant Bosma for a 43-yard touchdown pass to give Sunnyside Christian a 36-18 lead.
Hoff finished the game with 333 passing yards on only nine completions and five touchdowns.
After a Wavrin touchdown run to finish the third quarter, Hyer answered back with a three-yard touchdown run.
But Wavrin struck again, as he took a 65-yard run to the end zone to seal the game in the fourth quarter.
Bates said the Pirates must improve their tackling as they face Lacrosse-Washtucna on the road next week.
