RICHLAND — It took a late rally, but the Walla Walla High School volleyball team beat Hanford in five sets here Tuesday.

Wa-Hi opened the match with a 25-18 win in set one, before dropping the next two, 25-20, 25-22. The Blue Devils (4-8, 3-6) rebounded in a hard-fought fourth set, 28-26, before winning the decisive fifth set, 15-8.

Madi Doepker led the Blue Devil attack with 32 kills and four blocks. Head coach Don Hepker said Wa-Hi started off slowly and did not start playing until the fourth set.

“Although we won the first set, we had very little energy,” Hepker said. “Offensively, Madi was on fire, but defensively, we lack energy and precision.”

The Blue Devils were down 15-5 in the fourth frame, but rallied to cut the Hanford lead to 22-15. After Wa-Hi took the set, 28-26, Hepker said Wa-Hi used the momentum to easily win the fifth set.

Reece Carman chipped in 12 kills and two blocks and Paige Parsons added six blocks and four kills. After Katie Greene left the match with an injured hand, Lily Kaminsky stepped up and dished out 32 assists to the Blue Devil hitters. Hepker said Kaminsky did a great job filling in.

Wa-Hi hosts Pasco Thursday.
