Pirate football thumps L-W

WASHTUCNA — Pomeroy was clicking on all cylinders here Friday night, handing Southeast 1B League foe Lacrosse-Washtucna a 50-8 thumping on the road.

Jackson Hall racked up 264 of Pomeroy’s 418 yards on the ground and scored on runs of 38, 36, 50 and 36 yards in the rout.

“The kids came out right from the start and played well offensively and defensively,” Pirates coach Sanford Bates said.

Pomeroy got on the board early behind Hall’s 38- and 36-yard scoring runs to make it 12-0 after the opening quarter.

Pirates quarterback Kade Snyder hit Havin Heytveldt for a 24-yard touchdown pass, and L-W broke its one big play of the night, a 40-yard run to about the Pomeroy 5, to score at the end of the first half to make it 20-8 at halftime.

After the break, Hall’s scores of 50 and 36 yards were bookended by Wyatt Hyer scores from two and 28 yards and the Pirates’ defense shut L-W down for the final margin of victory.

“Hall ran very well for us,” Bates said of his tailback. “When he needed to bounce outside he did, and inside he ran hard and was able to break tackles. He just had a good game.”

Snyder, back at 100 percent after hurting his knee a couple games ago, didn’t need to go to the air with the Pomeroy ground game clicking, but connected on 2-of-6 passes for 28 yards, most coming on the touchdown to Heytveldt.

“He’s throwing the ball well for us,” Bates said. “He didn’t throw a whole lot this game, but when he had the opportunity he was able to get the ball where he needed when he needed.”

The Pomeroy defense — except for L-W’s one big run — shut the Tigercats down the entire game, allowing just 133 yards on the ground and 15 through the air.

“There were no worries as far as Lacrosse moving the ball on us,” Bates said.

The Pirates, now 2-1 in SE1B play and 3-3 overall, travel to Garfield-Palouse on Friday.

“Hopefully this is a good lead into our next game,” Bates said. “We should have some more confidence against Gar-Pal.”Pomeroy 50, Lacrosse-Washtucna 8
