Valdovinos scores twice as W-P wins

COLLEGE PLACE — The Waitsburg-Prescott soccer team netted four first-half goals as it downed Walla Walla Valley Academy, 6-1, on the Knights’ pitch Monday.

Ernesto Valdovinos connected on two scores from outside 30 yards during the first half, W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said.

The long shots are critical for W-P’s offense, Potts said, as the looks from outside the box open up more space inside.

“That was good to see, that’s something we haven’t seen lately,” Potts said. “It’s something we need to do. It’s something we’ve been working on. We need the outside shots to get the offense (going) inside.”

Valdovinos collected an assist in the 12th minute, as his pass led to Ivan Figueroa’s score.

With a 4-0 halftime lead, Potts said W-P was able to get everyone playing time.

Goalkeeper Christian Caro, who finished with one save in the first half, played midfield during the second half and scored a goal in the 59th minute.

Potts said Caro is a versatile player who can step out of the net and contribute.

“We’re trying to find places to play him more in the field as opposed to being the goalie all the time,” Potts said. “It’s good to have him out here. He takes the middle because he can play both defense and offense.”

Tyler Fedderson scored his first goal of the season in the 77th minute to finish the scoring for W-P.

Waitsburg-Prescott travels to Spokane to face Valley Christian at 4 p.m. Friday.

The Knights head to Dayton for a 6 p.m. match Wednesday.
