A chance meeting with a choreographer from Los Angeles has led to the opportunity for local students to attend a show choir singing and dancing workshop in March with Linda Love Simmons, a master teacher at Disneyland.
John Sager Middle School music teacher ReNae Davis is prepping her group of 25 choir singers in sixth- through ninth grades to go on the trip.
“They’ve been working hard all summer raising funds to go. They’re a talented group of kids,” she said. It costs about $1,000 per student for airfare and travel expenses.
To help raise funds, the youths will sell Krispy Kreme donuts for $10 per dozen on Friday and Saturday from 4-8 p.m. at Walmart, Staples in Eastgate, Dutch Brothers on Ninth Avenue, O’Reilly Auto Parts, 715 W. Poplar St., and in Milton-Freewater at Papa Murphy’s Pizza, 137 S. Columbia St.
Donuts will also be sold Friday morning at Davis Elementary and from 6-8:30 p.m. Friday in the Davis gym.
Donations are being accepted for anyone who’d like to sponsor a child. Their final payment is due in January.
ReNae and husband Kevin Davis, a Milton-Freewater native, moved to this area where Kevin owns and operates Kevin Davis House Designs and ReNae is in her 10th year teaching general music to kindergarteners-fifth graders and has sixth- through eighth-graders in choir. R.I.D.E.R. of Washington motorcycle club’s annual Toy Run will be noon Saturday.
Participants will converge at Cenex, 706 W. Rose St., and depart for the ride at 1 p.m., said member Marianne Allessio.
Each attendee is asked to bring an unwrapped toy for a youth. After a short ride through the area, riders will arrive at St. Vincent DePaul with the gifts. St. Vincent will provide coffee, cocoa and cookies to participants, Marianne said. A chili feed will follow at Eagles Aerie 26, 350 S. Second Ave.
Donations made at the chili feed will help R.I.D.E.R. sponsor a family for Christmas. A silent auction will assist in the same goal.
