Whitman men pick up two wins

FOREST GROVE, Ore. – For the second time in the last eight days, Junpei Tsuji scored an overtime goal to give the Whitman College men’s soccer team a 1-0 conference victory — this time at Pacific University.

A weekend before, Tsuji broke a scoreless tie against Pacific Lutheran with a last second goal in double-overtime.

Sunday’s victory over Pacific followed Saturday’s Missionary win over George Fox, also on the road, as Alex Barsher scored two goals in the 2-1 win.

Sunday’s victory over the Boxers improves the Missionaries’ conference mark to 6-4-1 and puts them in third place in the standings; their overall mark is now 7-8-2.

Tsuji’s fourth goal of the season came on a penalty kick in the third minute of overtime on Sunday.

Up until then, the match had remained scoreless as the Missionaries outshot Pacific for the match 16-6. Seven of Whitman’s shots were on-goal — three by Tsuji and two by Barsher.

Three of Whitman’s shots came in overtime. The Boxers managed three shots on target for the match.

Stuart Ellsworth went the distance in goal for Whitman, picking up the win while making three saves.

On Saturday, Barsher’s team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season brought the Missionaries back from a 1-0 deficit. It is the third time this season that Barsher has scored two goals in a game.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal by Luke Hammer in the 20th minute. Hammer intercepted a pass and then beat Whitman goalkeeper Niko Contos 1-on-1.

Whitman answered 11 minutes later when Barsher scored on a cross from Logan Grime. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Missionaries scored the winning goal at the 62:40 mark when Jesse Mirman and Barsher combined on a perfect give-and-go with Barsher putting the shot past the goalkeeper, inside the left post.

This is the fifth overtime match the Missionaries have played this season. Their record is 2-1-2 in extra periods.

The Missionaries host Linfield and Willamette this weekend with both matches starting at 1:30 p.m.
