WAITSBURG — A 68-year-old man is being held in the Walla Walla County jail on suspicion of beating a woman in his Waitsburg neighborhood with a club.
Sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday arrested Stephen R. Gipson in connection with the Monday afternoon attack on Norma Raymond, 67. He is being held in lieu of $20,000 bail on investigation of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault.
According to a Sheriff’s Office report, Raymond was at home in a back room when she heard someone come into her house on Warren Street. Raymond told deputies that her neighbor “Doc Rivers” was standing in her kitchen. The man was later identified as Gipson.
Raymond told deputies that the man charged her, knocking her down, then grabbed a wooden club from the top of her microwave and struck her in the arms, legs and back of the neck.
Raymond told deputies she managed to get the club away from the man and hit him with it, and he left.
When deputies arrived at Raymond’s house, she was bleeding from an injury to her left arm, and said she had been hit multiple times. Raymond also told deputies the man had accused her of stealing his car and cellphone.
Deputies identified Gipson through a vehicle registration check.
