SALEM — Walla Walla Community College finished the Chemeketa volleyball tournament 2-3 after picking up wins over Spokane and Umpqua Friday and Saturday.
The Warriors opened Friday’s pool play with losses to Chemeketa (25-18, 25-12) and Linn-Benton (25-22, 27-25) before defeating Spokane to pick up their first win of the 2013, 25-18, 19-25 and 15-12.
On Saturday the Warriors defeated Umpqua (25-10, 26-24 and 25-14) before getting knocked out of the tournament with a loss to Clackamas (25-12, 25-22 and 26-24).
“Although the 2-3 is not great, I think we found ourselves at this tournament,” WWCC coach Tim Toon said. “We lost a lot of close games and with a little more maturity could have finished 4-1.
“The first match (Chemeketa) was a train wreck,” Toon said. “We broke down in almost every skill area. With changes in personnel we were competitive in every other match.”
JaLisa Jose and Chantelle Zamora led the Warrior front line with 33 kills apiece and 28 and 33 digs, respectively.
Devin Casterline solidified her role as the Warriors’ libero with 49 digs and “solid serve receive,” Toon said.
Kiendra Chester picked up 22 kills, Breanna Mehling 69 assists, Allie Johnson 49 assists, and Allie Johnson 25 kills.
Walla Walla next plays at the Spokane tournament next weekend.
