The owners of TERO Estates and Flying Trout Wines have added another Walla Walla winery to their portfolio.
Doug Roskelley and Mike Tembreull are the new owners of Waters Winery, the 8-year-old winery known for its single-vineyard syrahs, as well as its red and white blends and rose.
Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed in an announcement on the purchase.
Included in the sale, however, was Waters’ interest in 21 Grams, the collaboration between Waters and Greg and Pam Harrington, owners of Gramercy Cellars. The Harringtons agreed to sell their interest in the label in a move that brings ownership under one roof, the announcement said.
“We saw this as an incredible opportunity to add diversity to our already established brands,” said TERO and Flying Trout co-founder and winemaker Doug Roskelley, in a prepared statement. “I couldn’t have asked for better labels to bring on board.”
Waters’ original winemaker Jamie Brown will return as winemaker. “Jamie will be a fantastic addition to our team,” Roskelley said. “He has a solid reputation in the market, and is dedicated to producing exceptional wines.” He said Harrington’s role as an integral person in 21 Grams will be missed.
Waters was founded in 2005 by Jason Huntley, a fifth-generation Walla Wallan who’d been based in Colorado at the time. He partnered with Brown as winemaker. In 2007, the $2 million winery was constructed on JB George Road, bringing wine production and tasting together in one space created by Boxwood Architects.
TERO Estates and Flying Trout Wines are known for limited estate wines — about 1,600 cases a year.
Those wines are described as reflecting “the ultimate expression of Windrow Vineyard,” a historic site that Roskelley and Tembreull have revived and improved. The property is certified Salmon Safe and Oregon LIVE. It is half of the first commercial vineyard planted in the Walla Walla Appellation, just west of Milton-Freewater, the announcement explained.
The TERO brand showcases the estate Windrow Vineyard planted largely for cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot varieties. Under Flying Trout, Roskelley focuses on malbec and malbec blends from numerous appellations.
“All four brands are intensely terroir driven,” Roskelley said. “Waters has an outstanding reputation for all their wines, but particularly the vineyard designate syrahs, something we don’t produce. the 21 Grams collaboration with Makoto Fujimura and his International Arts Movement is a way for us to give back to the wonderful communities that support us.”
Each brand will continue to be poured at the wineries by appointment and during special events, and daily at the joint tasting room at the Marcus Whitman Hotel & Conference Center.
