Lonai leads Pioneers at Elgin Stampede


ELGIN, Ore. — McLoughlin High’s Josie Lonai had a strong third-place finish at the Elgin Stampede Invite cross country meet here Friday.

Lonai finished in 21 minutes and 31.56 seconds.

Union’s Datriel O’Reilly won in 20:52.45.

Lonai’s teammate Susie Romero-diaz came in seventh in 23:03.5.

“They both had strong races,” Mac-Hi coach John Milleson said. “They looked good, and the rest of the girls team is improving. They look pretty solid.”

On the boys side, Austin Cousineau led the Pioneers with a 10th-place finish in 19:44.77.

“I was very happy with how Austin ran,” Milleson said.

“The rest of the boys stepped up and ran very solid,” he said. “I’m pretty happy with how everyone performed.”

Also finishing for the Mac-Hi girls were Maria Saldana (32nd, 28:33.5), Mindy Harmon (42nd, 30:48.51) and Daisy Velasco (47th, 34:49.32).

On the boys side, Mac-Hi’s Andrew Kain was 18th in 20:35.73. Pioneer teammates finishing include Raudel Garcia (40th, 22:07.48), Cody Harmon (43rd, 22:19.64), Colin Dygert (48th, 22:51.68) and Tyler Edwards (52nd, 23:28.02).

“The kids did really well today, top to bottom,” Milleson said.

Helix also sent some boys harriers to Elgin, with Dusty Bennett leading Grizzlies finishers in 28th place in 21:21.95.

Other Helix finishers include Preston Tarpley (46th, 22:49.14), Jarred Cope (73rd, 27:26.01), Justin Gridley (75th, 27:47.48) and Allan Holden (77th, 28:27.78).

Mac-Hi next runs against Union at Catharine Creek on Friday, with Helix heading to the Runner’s Soul XC Fest in Hermiston on Saturday.
