MILTON-FREEWATER — The Mac-Hi boys soccer team started out with a bang, defeating Redmond 9-0 at Shockman Field here Saturday in their opening match of the season.
“It took awhile for us to start scoring goals,” Mac-Hi coach Jose Garcia said. “The first 20 minutes or so we were missing a lot of passes and goals.”
Then the Pioneers started scoring with a vengeance, building a 6-0 lead at halftime.
Christian Torres and Sergio Alvarez scored three goals apiece while Alex Saldana tallied a pair. Moises Manon added a goal.
Gerardo Robles led all passers with two assists. Alvarez, Saldana and Manon all contributed an assist.
“It was the first game and the guys were trying to get know one another on the field,” Garcia said. “They will learn to play together better and the new guys will become more patient. We’ll have to keep training but the guys did do well for the first game.”
The Pioneers put 21 shots on-goal. The Mac-Hi freshman keeper Humberto Villagomez made two saves, according to Garcia.
“The guys put a lot of pressure on themselves this first game,” Garcia said. “They will help each other out and learn to relax.”
The Pioneers will play at The Dalles Tuesday and at La Grande Thursday before returning home to host Baker at 2 p.m. Saturday.
