Blue Devils open MCC play with win over Kennewick

KENNEWICK — Walla Walla High opened Mid-Columbia Conference play with a five-set victory over Kennewick on the Lions’ court Tuesday.

The Blue Devils traded sets with the Lions throughout, winning 25-22, 18-25, 25-14, 18-25, 15-11.

“This was a team win,” Wa-Hi coach Don Hepker said. “We had outstanding individual plays, but what won the game was teamwork. Our girls fought hard when we were ahead as well as behind.”

Reece Carman led the way with 17 kills and 11 digs for Wa-Hi.

Madi Doepker put up 15 kills, two blocks and 10 digs; Jacie McDaniels came up with 10 digs; Jamie Quaresma had five kills, 19 assists and 10 digs; and Katie Greene dished out 18 assists and had six digs.

The Blue Devils had to juggle their lineup a bit after starting middle blocker Paige Parsons was injured in practice on Monday.

“We pulled Haley Nielson up after her JV (junior varsity) match to help, and she did an amazing job,” Hepker said. “She was only allowed to play in two varsity sets, so Kennedy Yonts, starting right-side hitter, stepped in and made huge contributions in the middle.”

The Blue Devils, 1-0 in MCC and 2-2 overall, head to Southridge at 7 p.m. Thursday in another league tilt.
