Indians rout Ione, 76-32

IONE — It was a big day for the Touchet offense, as the Indians racked up 394 total yards en route to a 76-32 win against Ione Friday.

Touchet’s Elias Martinez was responsible for seven touchdowns, as the quarterback racked up five touchdowns through the air, one on the ground and added a 45-yard fumble return for a touchdown on defense.

Three of those TD passes went to senior Edgar Rincon, who also added another rushing touchdown for the Indians (2-0).

“Elias just does everything that we ask him to do,” Indians coach Gary Dorman said. “He doesn’t try to win games on his own or be the whole offense. He’s just a really smart player.

“(Edgar Rincon is) just learning how good he can be,” he said. “He’s doing a lot of good things for us. He’s kind of turned into that all-around guy that people are going (to have) to account for him on the field, too.”

Touchet jumped out to a sizable lead after the first quarter on the strength of three passing scores and a 41-yard punt return touchdown by sophomore Colter McKeown.

Martinez’s fumble recovery finished the scoring in the opening quarter, as the Indians held a 38-6 advantage.

Dorman said Touchet was striving for balance on offense, rather than having to rely on either running or passing, though he also appreciated the big scoring plays from McKeown and Martinez.

“Colter (is) such a dynamic runner,” Dorman said. “He makes people miss. He can run for power. He’s got tremendous speed. He’s a handful to bring down. Then, right at the end of the first quarter, our kids just played really good defense and Elias was able to pick it up and he was able to run by everybody before they knew he had the ball.”

Dorman said the varsity players got the second quarter off, as he inserted some of his younger players into the game. Ione responded with three straight touchdowns to finish the first half, which prompted Dorman to re-insert his varsity players.

With Touchet holding a 46-26 halftime lead, Dorman said the starters were eager to get back in the game. The defense responded by holding the Cardinals to a paltry negative 19 yards rushing and only 106 total yards in the second half.

Considering Ione racked up 93 of those yards on a touchdown pass during the fourth quarter, Dorman was more than pleased with his starting defense’s return.

“They realized they had an opportunity to come out in the second half and they were pretty enthusiastic,” Dorman said. “I don’t have to work very hard to get them excited to play. (There’s) good leadership. They are excited to get out there and play.”

Touchet finished with 30 second-half points, as Martinez and Rincon combined for all four of the second-half scores. The Indians finished with 242 rushing yards and 152 through the air.

Dorman said the offensive line improved on initiating and holding blocks, which allowed Touchet’s 11 different ball carriers free rein against Ione’s defense.

“They did a much better job as far as sustaining blocks and letting our running backs get to that second level,” Dorman said of his offensive line. “In eight-man football, once you get into that second level that’s about it. I thought our line played very well after working on some of the things in practice that we’re trying to improve on.”

Now, with a matchup at Rosalia looming on Friday, Dorman said his team must prepare for its biggest test so far.

“I think our kids will be tested a whole lot more this coming Friday than they have been,” he said. “It will be fun to go against one of the better teams we’ll play all year. We’ll just keep working to get better.”
