Big plays Pomeroy’s downfall in loss to Clearwater Valley

KOOSKIA, Idaho — Clearwater Valley registered five touchdowns that came from outside the 20-yard line as the Rams beat Pomeroy, 52-24, here Friday night.

After scoring on their first possession of the game, the Pirates were unable to get anything going offensively for the remainder of the first half, head coach Sanford Bates said.

“We stopped them on their first drive and got the ball back, and they came back at us after that series and they just played better than we did from then through halftime” he said. “Then at halftime we made some adjustments. But basically, they just outplayed us.”

Pomeroy had its hands full with the Rams rushing attack, as running back Dillon Fisher racked up 172 yards on 11 carries. He also scored Clearwater Valley’s first two touchdowns — one on a 30-yard run and another 41-yard scamper.

The big plays weren’t done there, however.

The Rams extended their lead to 30-6 before halftime as Jake Farmer hauled in a 42-yard pass from quarterback Hahots Shebala.

Bates said Clearwater Valley’s ability to run the ball from various formations proved to be pivotal.

“They were getting their people on our people,” Bates said. “Our secondary was having to make a lot of tackles. They did run — we were expecting I-formation, which they did do. But then they had a spread game, which we hadn’t realized they had. That gave us a little bit of trouble.”

Pomeroy racked up 295 yards on the ground, but simply could not find pay dirt.

Cade Gingerich led the way for the Pirates, as he tallied 136 yards on 18 carries with one touchdown.

Bates said Clearwater Valley’s defense took away the outside running lanes early, but Gingerich’s bruising style heeded some big gains on the ground.

“He’s a hard runner,” Bates said of Gingerich. “We had to go inside and he was able to do that. We softened that up a little bit and then we were able to go back outside.”

Bates also highlighted Bryan McGreby for his effort. He finished with an 18-yard touchdown run and two catches for 28 yards.

Pomeroy hosts St. John-Endicott at 7 p.m. Friday.
