PASCO — Walla Walla High School’s Ellie Rassbach threw a shutout here in the opener of Mid Columbia Conference softball action. The Blue Devils blanked Chiawana 4-0 in game one. Wa-Hi then improved to 2-0 as it rallied for six runs over the last two innings of the nightcap to pull out an 8-5 win.

“It was nice to open up conference (play) with a couple of wins,” Blue Devil coach Kate Keyes said. “Chiawana didn’t make it easy on us.”

Wa-Hi got all Rassbach needed in the first inning of the opener. The Blue Devils plated three runs in the opener, added one in the third and Rassbach did the rest. The senior right hander went the distance and scattered five hits to complete her shutout.

Jacie McDaniels had three hits, Rassbach and Jordy Storm each added two hits as the Wa-Hi offense pounded 10 hits.

The Riverhawks grabbed a 1-0 lead after one in the night cap. Wa-Hi tied it in the top of the third but Chiawana answered with a run in the home third to regain the lead.

Both teams added a run and Wa-Hi came to bat in the visitor sixth trailing 3-2. The Blue Devil offense then came to life and scored twice to take a 4-3 lead. Wa-Hi put up four more in the seventh, but Chiawana fought back with two runs in the home seventh, but Brandi Schoessler, who went all the way in the circle for Wa-Hi, stopped the rally and earned the 8-5 win.

“They put pressure on us with their offense and had baserunners nearly every inning,” Keyes said. “Offensively, we struggled to make the necessary adjustments and we weren’t stringing our hits together. The girls were able to battle when it mattered and push across some runs.”

Wa-Hi hosts Kamiakin Friday at Murr Field at 3 p.m.
