District hires director of Technical Skills Center

WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla School Board on Tuesday voted to hire Dennis Matson to direct the under-construction Southeast Area Technical Skills Center.

Matson, currently the principal of Newport High School in Newport, Wash., is taking over a program that offers Career and Technical Education to area students, including health sciences, advanced manufacturing and welding technology, digital media technology and sustainable energy technology.

The 37,000-square-foot facility is due to be completed in March, with classes beginning in the fall.

Matson and Walla Walla Superintendent Mick Miller worked together previously when the two served together at the Deer Park School District in Deer Park, Wash.

“In my years in education, Dennis Matson is the best program builder I have ever seen,” Miller said in a news release. “Dennis is such a good fit with the outstanding CTE department at Wa-Hi and Lincoln and will help us expand our programs in our middle schools. The SEA-TECH team is shaping up into a powerhouse for kids.”
